The Velasco Drainage District accepted operations and maintenance from the City of Freeport prior to the District becoming the local sponsor for the Hurricane & Vicinity Protection Levee System in 1958. The station has two electric pumps that together are capable of pumping a total of 100,000 gallons per minute.
